Eco Cleans

Dangers kept under our sinks!

If you are using chemicals to clean your home or office, you are unwittingly adding to the pollutants you and others will breathe in, the consequences of this to health is potentially very serious.

Research has shown, that using chemical based household cleaners can be especially problematic if someone in your home or office suffers from Asthma, Chronic Bronchitis, Emphysema, or Recurring Allergies.
In the USA research carried out by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), has shown that on average indoor air contains two to five times more pollutants per cubic foot than outdoor air.  A further EPA study revealed that some toxic levels found in homes were greater than the levels which qualify as chemical waste sites.
In 2003 the Mount Sinai, School of Medicine in New York ran a series of tests on voluteers who neither lived nor worked near to industrial facilities.  An average of 91contaminants were discovered in each voluteer, it was found that most of these contaminants came from pesticides, beauty and personal grooming products and household cleaners.  The chemicals found were capable of causing cancer, brain and nervous system damage, birth defects and auto immune problems.

Here are some common ingredients and effects found in commercial household products.

The three most commonly used Commercial products and their potential problems.

Furniture Polish
:  Strong fumes from petroleum distillates can irritate sensitive airways and aggravate allergies.  In addition, these chemicals are extremely dangerous for children to ingest.  Because of their viscosity, there's a high risk that a child will inhale the polish, leading to a potentially serious irritation of the lungs.  Some susceptible children may even end up on ventilators or respirators for weeks as a result.
Bathroom and Toilet cleaners:  Many of these cleaners contain caustic chemicals that can burn skin, mucus membranes and eyes, and if swallowed, the mouth, oesophagus, and stomach.  The strong fumes can irritate the airways, especially for people with asthma, chronic pulmonary diseases, and allergies.
Window Cleaner:  Most are ammonia based and can trigger respiratory problems in sensitive people.

Most experts now advise that when sourcing products if a label includes the words "WARNING", POISON", OR "DANGER" avoid using it, it is also important to be aware that warning labels only address issues caused by ingestion, however, ninety per cent of health problems are caused by inhalation.  The chemicals in these products fill the air with what we call a "Clean Smell" in reality we are inhaling a "Poisonous Smell".

Note: It is potentially hazardous to mix cleaning products some contain ammonia, others contain chlorine, mixing the two produces chloramine gas, a serious respiratory irritant.
